Did God Choose Us or Do We Choose Him?

Predestination and election are touchy subjects in the church today. Some believe that God chose an "elect" few to go to heaven. Some believe that we are completely responsible for coming to Christ. Is there a middle ground? If so, how does it work? If you are in the "Calvinist" corner, does God send people to hell? If your in the "Arminian" corner, how can a spiritually dead person come to Christ on his own? Ring in, ask questions, give answers. Explore God's Word, It's crazy fun....

  1. Hey Rick! It's been awhile since I've seen one of these; glad you got one up! I have been reading through 1 Peter, and it really touches on this subject. 1:1 says:

"Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to God's elect, strangers in the world...who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance."

The words elect and sanctifying really stand out to me, because they are almost opposites. On one hand Peter is saying that we were elected by God, but on the other hand he is saying that it is His Spirit that is sanctifying us and making us holy. Could it be that God gives everyone an opportunity to accept Him, but many choose to deny Him? And could the word "elect" just imply that God knows who is going to accept Him and be saved? Great topic!
